Who's Who - Celebrities Among APBA Devotees

What started as a teenager's fascination with baseball in 1931 has grown into legions of faithful - and famous - players. Many world leaders, world-class athletes, Hollywood legends and baseball's immortal scribes describe themselves as ardent fans of the game.

President George Bush began playing APBA when he started his political career as a Congressman from Texas. His sons George W. and Jeb joined in on some heated family showdowns. In fact, the APBA Game Company regularly received holiday cards from the Bush family.

Other political leaders who played the game to either escape the rigors of their duties or to further refine their political strategy skills include Ed Koch, an affable former mayor of New York, and David Eisenhower, grandson of President Eisenhower and son-in-law of another president, Richard Nixon.

Hollywood embraced the game over the years: Danny Kaye, Ray Goulding (Bob and Ray comedy team), Fred Grandy (Love Boat's Gopher), Jeff Daniels and All In the Family director Bud Yorkin are just a few who have contacted us.

Of course, athletes have found APBA further hones their baseball skills. Major league greats of yesteryear and today have picked up the game, including; Joe Torre, Curt Schilling, Jim Kaat, Dave Magadan, Maury Wills, Jim Sundberg, Harmon Killebrew, Jeff Burroughs, Frank Lucchesi, Leo Durocher, Woody Woodard and many more.

Dave Kindred and John Rawlings, columnist and editor, respectively, of The Sporting News; Frank Deford, one of the nation's top baseball writers and regular in Sports Illustrated; Alison Gordon, baseball's first female beat writer; and sportcaster Brent Musberger all credit APBA as an inspiration for their love of the game. And within the sports collectibles hobby, there's T.S. O'Connell from Krause Publications (who actually visited Seitz's home in 1979), and the Beckett Publications gang, including Tom Layber, Mike Payne, Rich Klein and Brad Grmela.

Although we're sure there are countless more who've "loaded up an APBA shaker," these are some of the famous people who have publicly admitted their love for the game from the worlds of politics, sports, and entertainment. If you know of any others, let us know.
