Foot appears annually on Golf Digest's list of the top 10 courses
in the United States, and has been the host of five major championships
- four U.S. Opens (1929, 1959, 1974, 1984) and the 1997 PGA Championship.
Winged Foot will host its fifth U.S. Open in 2006. The difficulty
of this course was bestcaptured in the 1974 book "Massacre at Winged
Foot: The U.S. Open minute by minute" by the late Dick Schaap. Hale
Irwin won that tournament with a four round score of +7, the second
highest winning score in U.S. Open history since World War II. Many
professional golfers have commented on how tough Winged Foot is,
but perhaps no one said it any better than Jack Nicklaus when he
said "the last 18 holes are very difficult." The release of Winged
Foot also introduces Course Characteristics in the computer game.
Course Characteristics are specific conditions that allow each course
to play realistically. For Winged Foot, you must deal with trees
that overhang in certain fairways, greens that slope in different
directions, some sand traps so deep that it may take more than one
shot to escape, and greens that putt like U.S. Open greens. Winged
Foot promises to be a challenge unlike any that you have experienced
in APBA Golf for Windows. |
