1950 APBA BASEBALL SET SELLS FOR $40,000

Lancaster, PA - In 1951, the first APBA Baseball game was selling for $10. The game included twenty player cards for each of the 16 Major League Baseball teams. Recently, July l8th, one of the original first editions of the 1950 card set was sold for $40,000 in a private auction.  Only 137 were printed that first year. The set was the personal set of Richard Seitz, the founder of the APBA Game Company.  The auction was conducted via e-mail.

The minimum bid was set at $22,500.  The opening bid was $25,000.  Four bidders later, the auction concluded.  It took two months of e-mails to identify the interested bidders.  The parties involved asked not to be identified.

“This is a very exciting occurrence,” said APBA President Marc Rinaldi.  “APBA has been making quality sports stat and strategy games for well over 50 years.  The intent was never for the game or its card sets to be collectibles, but the fact that this inaugural card set could garner that amount of money speaks volumes to the passion of our customers and their feelings in regards to the quality of our products.  That is just one of the reasons why we refer to them as members of the APBA family.”

Fifty six years later, APBA is still producing quality baseball games and card sets.  If you don’t have $40,000 for an APBA baseball card set, one can buy current completed seasons, such as the 2005 season for only $39.95.  Historical baseball seasons such as soon to be released 1977 and 1917 are available for only $30.  APBA carries a complete line of historical season sets, All-time great team sets, and more! The 2006 set will be available in December, in time for the holidays.
