DVAL TOURNAMENT
11/8/2025 - The 5th Annual DVAL Tournament drew 30 participants who raised a total of $856 for ALS research. That’s a total of $2,330 over the last four years. WOW! Thanks to all those who contributed to this worthy cause.
The four division winners were Bob Demarco (6-3, 1977 PHI), Joe Primavera (6-3, 2022 ATL), Ryan Strauss (6-3, 1952 BRK), and Nigel Earhart (7-2, 1975 CIN). In the first semi-final game the 1977 Phillies downed the 2022 Braves 5-1, while in the second the 1952 Dodgers defeated the 1975 Reds 6-2. In the Finals the 1977 Phillies took an early 4-0 lead, but the 1952 Dodgers came back with a 4-run inning to tie the game. The Dodgers picked up 2 more runs for a 6-4 lead. The Phillies got a late HR but the rally fell short and the Dodgers took game 1, 6-5. In game 2, the Dodgers hit 6 solo HR's en route to a 7-3 win. Congratulations to Ryan Strauss for his first DVAL Championship and kudos to Bob Demarco for bringing the 1977 Phillies into the Finals two years in a row.
Next year’s DVAL Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, 11/7/2026. Dick Moore did another wonderful job hosting this premier event.
LINDA B. SCHULZ MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT
10/25/2025 - 56 participants gathered in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania on an overcast and chilly day to honor Ken and Darren Schulz’s mother, Linda. Following divisional play, eight players advanced to the playoffs; John Scalzo (2015 Astros), Bob Winenger (1905 Phillies), Steve Skoff (1910 Red Sox), Butch Newton (2023 Mariners), Brian Silvis (1903 Naps), Blake Delgouffre (2023 Guardians), Tom Martin (1925 Yankees), and Jeremy Smith (1914 Giants). In the semi-finals the 1910 Red Sox defeated the 2015 Astros by a 7-4 score and the 1903 Naps downed the 1914 Giants by a 9-5 tally. In the best of three games finals, Steve Skoff won his third LBS Championship, defeating Brian Silvis 5-4 and 4-3. The day had many other highlights, including over $1100 raised for the American Diabetes Association in Linda’s name, participation of long-time Pirates broadcaster Greg Brown, and a young participant winning an Andrew McCutchen signed bat. Thanks to Pastor Ken and Darren, their wives, and their family for organizing, directing, and carrying out such a wonderful event.
TCABT XXIV
10/3/2025 - The TCABT was a great success thanks to 26 participants. Upon completion of pool play, the five division champs were Nick Tegeler (1995 Reds), Dan Pierce (2011 Yankees), Kaeleb Smead (2023 Braves), Bruce Tyler (1928 Athletics), and Rob Milinkovich (2024 Phillies). The three wild card entries were Kevin Cluff (1969 Orioles), Pat Martin (1984 Cubs), and Jim Fraasch (1968 Tigers). Quarterfinal matches were won by the Yankees, Cubs, Reds, and Braves. In the semifinals, The 2011 Yankees downed the 1995 Reds 2 games to 1 while the other semifinal series saw the 1984 Cubs upset the 2023 Braves 2 games to 1. The best-of-3 championship series saw the 1984 Cubs win the opener by a 4-1 score. Game 2 went to the 2011 Yankees in a 6-0 shutout. Game 3 went to the Cubs 6-4 on a thrilling late inning rally. Congratulations to Pat Martin and his 1984 Cubs on capturing his first TCABT Championship and to Dan Pierce and his deep run with his 2011 Yankees. The consolation bracket was won by Barry Boever and his 1977 Phillies. Thanks to Jim Fraasch for coordinating and directing the tournament.
Old Dominion Tournament
9/13/2025 - 16 managers gathered at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, Virginia for the annual Old Dominion APBA Baseball tournament on Saturday, September 13. This year’s theme was any non-World Series winning team from 1920-1969. The teams were placed in four divisions named after former area professional baseball players Ray Dandridge, Johnny Oates, Johnny Grubb, and Granny Hamner. Each team played 8 divisional games, with the top 8 teams making the playoffs.
Following the first playoff round, the final four teams were the 1968 Cardinals (Jim Cicila) versus the 1969 Orioles (Bruce Wells) and the 1930 Giants (Lou Stewart) vs the 1950 Red Sox (Kevin Burke). Bruce’s Orioles and Kevin’s Red Sox prevailed and moved on to the best of three Final Round. The Red Sox drew first blood, winning the opener 2-0. But the Orioles came back to take games 2 and 3 and bring home the Championship for their rookie manager playing in his very first APBA tournament. Bruce has already said he will return next year to defend his title. Thanks to Jim Saska for coordinating and directing this annual tournament.
