SOUTH BEND TOURNAMENT
6/7/2025 – Auerbach takes South Bend
37 managers gathered at the Holiday Inn to determine the best 100-game loser. Four divisions battled through eight pool games to determine four division winners and four wild card teams. Jeremy Smith (1905 Brooklyn Superbas) won the Pete Rose Division (7-1). Scott Ramsey (1976 Montreal Expos) won the Joe Jackson Division (7-1). Alex Auerbach (2010 Seattle Mariners) won the Barry Bonds Division (6-2), and Norm Zavala (2018 Kansas City Royals) gained the number one seed by going 8-0, claiming the Mark McGwire Division. Wild card teams were the 1954 Baltimore Orioles/Dick Glisinski (6-2), 1930 Philadelphia Phillies/Dave Chestnut (5-3), 2013 Miami Marlins/Camron Shaffer (5-3) and the 1912 New York Highlanders/Dave Rueck (5-3).
In the playoffs, the Royals beat the Highlanders, 5-3, the Expos eliminated the Marlins, 5-4, the Superbas bested the Phillies, 13-6, and the Mariners clipped the Orioles, 7-6. Semi-finals saw the Mariners sink the undefeated Royals, 4-2, while the Superbas dropped the Expos, 6-4.
The championship game saw a tight contest. With a runner on second and one out, the Mariners held on to top the Superbas, 3-2, giving Alex Auerbach his first tournament championship!
CHARM CITY CLASSIC
5/10/2025 – Carl Swift(ly) Captures The Charm City Classic
After winning a closely contested divisional race, Carl Swift and his 1923 Cincinnati Reds went on to claim the Championship in The 4th Annual APBA Baseball Charm City Classic. He defeated Bill Groff and his tough 1952 Yankees two games to none in the championship round. Carl was closely pursued in his pennant quest by Greg Wells (2011 Rangers) and Rick Stanford (1998 Astros). To win his division, Groff had to contend with Sonny Hall (1939 Yankees) and Phil Vento (2010 Twins).
The 22-team tournament was held on Saturday May 10th in Timonium, Maryland with a popular theme: Born4Baseball. Each manager was required to select a team with a player who shared their birthday (month and date). Carl matched Ed Roush’s birth date. Carl received a championship trophy inscribed with a remembrance for APBA Hall of Famer Roy Langhans.
Thanks to Sonny Hall for coordinating and directing another fine event. The date and theme of the 2026 Charm City Classic has not yet been chosen, but if you are interested in more information as it becomes available or wish to be placed on the Charm City e-mail list, please send a request to apba66charmcity@gmail.com.
CENTRAL OHIO APBA BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
5/10/2025 – Gilbert’s 1953 Dodgers win the Central Ohio Championship
After getting together on an informal basis several previous times, the inaugural Central Ohio APBA (COAPBA) tournament was held in Columbus on Saturday, May 10, 2025. Nine managers representing the states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio were in attendance. The theme was teams from East Coast franchises (Present back to 1950 – Toronto, Montreal, Boston AL and NL, New York AL and NL, Brooklyn, Philadelphia AL and NL, Baltimore, Washington, Miami and Tampa Bay – Atlanta was excluded due to an organizer oversight!).
The 5-team Frank Howard Division was won by the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers at 6-2, and the 4-team Paul O’Neill Division was captured by the 2023 Philadelphia Phillies at 4-4. Mark Gilbert’s Dodgers defeated Lind Pratt’s Phillies 2-1 in the Championship round.
With a theme still to be determined, the 2nd Annual COAPBA Tournament is being planned for Saturday, May 9, 2026. Thanks to Dan Pierce for coordinating and directing this inaugural event.
