SOUTHERN ILLINOIS TOURNAMENT

8/9/25 - 18 managers gathered at the Community Center in Shiloh, Illinois to roll the dice and try to claim a championship.  Participating teams had to have a .550 or less winning percentage.  Eight teams would advance to the double elimination tournament.  Robert Elley led the way in pool play, guiding his 2016 Blue Jays to a 9-1 record and taking the Clark Division.  Scott Ramsey led the 1979 Cardinals to an 8-2 record in taking the Smith Division.  The Tudor Division ended in a three-way tie between Brian Wells’ 2000 Diamondbacks, Dave Reuck’s 2021 Braves and Greg Wells’ 1938 Reds.  Brian won the tie breaker with Dave and Greg advancing as wild cards. The remaining three wild cards were Kyle Daniels’ 2004 Cubs, Erich Marx’s 1995 Dodgers, and Jim Hutchison’s 2004 Padres.

Reuck swept through the winners bracket, beating Daniels, Elley, and Hutchison. Ramsey beat Greg Wells and faced off against Hutchison for the losers bracket title.  The Padres came away with the win, only to go against Reuck’s Braves again, needing to beat them twice to claim the title. After the Padres tied the score at 3-all in the top of the 8th, Adam Duvall hit his 2nd homer of the game to send the 2021 Braves to a 5-3 victory and claim the first Shiloh title.

ROBERT HENRY MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

8/9/2025 - The 10th edition of the Robert Henry Memorial Tournament took place at the Alloy Hotel in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania on Saturday, August 9.  16 participants from the APBA adult community and campers from The Bridesburg Boys and Girls Club competed for the Dusty Welsh Championship Trophy.   Two divisions (Langhans and Seitz) each had 8 players with 7 games in group play.  In the semi-finals, Brian Cavanaugh and his 2024 Phillies defeated Rod McLeod and his 1953 Dodgers, 6-4, while Vincent Cavanaugh and his 2022 Astros downed Matt Pera and his 2022 Braves by a 5-4 score.  This set up an all-Cavanaugh family Championship game.  In a high scoring back and forth game, Vince defeated his dad Brian by a 9-6 margin.  Congratulations to Vincent, who is now a 3-time Champion of this tournament, to all of the participants, and to Dave Hummel for directing his first Henry Tournament.  Other items of interest on the day included: Gregg Wiseburn’s 1908 Detroit Tiger pitcher Ed Willett tossing a no-hitter against Gary Brown’s 2021 Dodgers; remembrance of Roy Langhans, David Small, and Nick Braccia, who all recently passed; and recognition of Rod McLeod for 5 years of participation.

RANCHO PALOS VERDES TOURNAMENT

7/19/2025 - 7 managers heeded the call to the Rancho Palos Verdes Tournament held at David Dawn’s sister’s house.  Seven teams with a schedule designed for 8 called for some creativity.  So instead of going the bye route, the odd man out each round took on the 1969 Athletics on a solo rolling basis.  Teams making the playoffs included the 1969 Orioles (Daniel Jenkins), 1982 Angels (Daniel’s Uncle Chuck), 1977 Dodgers (Thorpe Feng), and 1977 Phillies (Dan Velderrain).  The AL and NL teams were paired to ensure an AL vs. NL championship game. Neither top seed would advance as the 1982 Angels advanced with a 5-3 victory and the 1977 Phillies advanced with an 8-3 win.  In the winner take all championship final game, the 1977 Phillies outlasted the 1982 Angels by a 6-5 score to take home the Keith Medeiros APBA mouse pad commemorating the win. Thanks to David Dawn for coordinating and directing the tournament.  Best part is there was talk of starting up an annual West Coast tournament - stay tuned for details.

CHICAGOLAND TOURNAMENT

7/12/2025 - 44 managers convened at the AMVETS Post 66 in Wheeling, Illinois, to honor “Pops” Spatz, who recently passed away, and his son Rob, in his last Chicagoland Tournament as director. The four divisions were named after Pops’ favorite TV/movie characters, with each team playing 8 divisional games. Twelve teams advanced to the playoffs. Following the wild card round and quarterfinals, the semifinalists were the 1908 Cubs (Dave Wetherbee), the 1911 Athletics (Kyle Daniels), the 1928 Athletics (Mike Hernandez), and the 1970 Orioles (Tom Johnson). The 1908 Cubs shut out the 1911 Athletics 3-0, while the 1928 Athletics downed the 1970 Orioles by a score of 8-2. In the final, the 1928 Athletics eked out a 1-0 win against the 1908 Cubs to earn the inaugural Pops Spatz Memorial Championship. Congratulations to Mike Hernandez (and his fill-in Justin Schubert) on their Championship run. Thanks to Rob Spatz for his leadership over the last decade, making the Chicagoland one of the premier APBA Regional Tournaments.

SOUTH BEND TOURNAMENT

6/7/2025 – 37 managers gathered at the Holiday Inn to determine the best 100-game loser. Four divisions battled through eight pool games to determine four division winners and four wild card teams. Jeremy Smith (1905 Brooklyn Superbas) won the Pete Rose Division (7-1). Scott Ramsey (1976 Montreal Expos) won the Joe Jackson Division (7-1). Alex Auerbach (2010 Seattle Mariners) won the Barry Bonds Division (6-2), and Norm Zavala (2018 Kansas City Royals) gained the number one seed by going 8-0, claiming the Mark McGwire Division. Wild card teams were the 1954 Baltimore Orioles/Dick Glisinski (6-2), 1930 Philadelphia Phillies/Dave Chestnut (5-3), 2013 Miami Marlins/Camron Shaffer (5-3) and the 1912 New York Highlanders/Dave Rueck (5-3).

In the playoffs, the Royals beat the Highlanders, 5-3, the Expos eliminated the Marlins, 5-4, the Superbas bested the Phillies, 13-6, and the Mariners clipped the Orioles, 7-6. Semi-finals saw the Mariners sink the undefeated Royals, 4-2, while the Superbas dropped the Expos, 6-4.

The championship game saw a tight contest. With a runner on second and one out, the Mariners held on to top the Superbas, 3-2, giving Alex Auerbach his first tournament championship!
