Old Dominion Tournament

9/13/2025 - 16 managers gathered at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, Virginia for the annual Old Dominion APBA Baseball tournament on Saturday, September 13.  This year’s theme was any non-World Series winning team from 1920-1969.  The teams were placed in four divisions named after former area professional baseball players Ray Dandridge, Johnny Oates, Johnny Grubb, and Granny Hamner.  Each team played 8 divisional games, with the top 8 teams making the playoffs.

Following the first playoff round, the final four teams were the 1968 Cardinals (Jim Cicila) versus the 1969 Orioles (Bruce Wells) and the 1930 Giants (Lou Stewart) vs the 1950 Red Sox (Kevin Burke).  Bruce’s Orioles and Kevin’s Red Sox prevailed and moved on to the best of three Final Round.  The Red Sox drew first blood, winning the opener 2-0.  But the Orioles came back to take games 2 and 3 and bring home the Championship for their rookie manager playing in his very first APBA tournament.  Bruce has already said he will return next year to defend his title.  Thanks to Jim Saska for coordinating and directing this annual tournament.

Shoeless Joe APBA Tournament

8/9/2025 - Congratulations to Randy Alton and his 1930 Philadelphia Athletics for winning the 2025 Shoeless Joe APBA Tournament.  Randy managed his Athletics to an 8-0 record during group play and then swept the playoffs with only one loss in the best of three finals.  Randy’s formidable opponent in the finals was Tony Stevens, who won this tournament the past two years.  This year, Tony brought the very powerful 1905 NY Giants.  Dead Ball manufactured runs vs live ball power!

Mike Kehrer managed the Indianapolis Hoosiers, a 1914 Federal league team, but lost to Randy’s Athletics in the semi-finals.  Ron Grzeskiewicz made his annual visit to the playoffs.

This year, about half of the 20 participants met up on Friday at the Ty Cobb Museum.  After the tournament on Saturday, the group took a picture in front of the Joe Jackson statue, they then visited the Joe Jackson Museum, and then went to the Greenville Drive game.  ALL DAY BASEBALL!
Thanks to everyone who attended, and to Jack Dolan for coordinating and directing the tournament.  Next year, they will be trying a new tournament theme.  Stay tuned for details.

Glass City Tournament

8/23/2025 - The 10th Annual Toledo Glass City APBA Tournament (GCABT-X) was held on Saturday, August 23. 36 teams and managers showed up to compete for the Glass City Tournament trophy. Each participating team had to have either a Cy Young winner or an MVP player. Six divisions of six teams each were organized for pool play.

In the end, Clay Bauserman and his 1970 Cincinnati Reds beat Dan Pierce and his 2006 Minnesota Twins, 2 games to 1, in an exciting championship round. Game scores were 4-2, 2-4, and 8-5.

The tentative date for next year's tournament is August 29, 2026. Congratulations to Clay Bauserman on his championship run and thanks to tournament director Ron Emch and his associates.

Sioux Falls Shakedown

8/16/2025 - The 1st Annual Sioux Falls Shakedown took place at the Scheels IcePlex.  12 players took part in the inaugural event, representing six states.  The divisions were named after players from the Rushmore State: Sparky Anderson, Mark Ellis, and Terry Francona. After nine divisional games, the top eight teams made the quarterfinals.

Advancing from the quarterfinals were Jeff Boeding (1937 Yankees), Dave Yochum (1976 Reds), Dave Jones (2019 Twins), and Steve Woodward (2019 Dodgers).  In the semifinals, the 2019 Twins swept the 1937 Yankees in two games and the 1976 Reds downed the 2019 Dodgers two games to one.  In the Championship Series, the 2019 Twins swept the 1976 Reds by scores 7-5 and 5-4.  Congratulations to Dave Jones and his 2019 Twins for winning the inaugural Sioux Falls Shakedown.  Thanks to Dave Druk for organizing and directing this event.  The day also raised $460 for Fight Like a Ninja Suicide Awareness of Sioux Falls.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS TOURNAMENT

8/9/2025 - 18 managers gathered at the Community Center in Shiloh, Illinois to roll the dice and try to claim a championship.  Participating teams had to have a .550 or less winning percentage.  Eight teams would advance to the double elimination tournament.  Robert Elley led the way in pool play, guiding his 2016 Blue Jays to a 9-1 record and taking the Clark Division.  Scott Ramsey led the 1979 Cardinals to an 8-2 record in taking the Smith Division.  The Tudor Division ended in a three-way tie between Brian Wells’ 2000 Diamondbacks, Dave Reuck’s 2021 Braves and Greg Wells’ 1938 Reds.  Brian won the tie breaker with Dave and Greg advancing as wild cards. The remaining three wild cards were Kyle Daniels’ 2004 Cubs, Erich Marx’s 1995 Dodgers, and Jim Hutchison’s 2004 Padres.

Reuck swept through the winners bracket, beating Daniels, Elley, and Hutchison. Ramsey beat Greg Wells and faced off against Hutchison for the losers bracket title.  The Padres came away with the win, only to go against Reuck’s Braves again, needing to beat them twice to claim the title. After the Padres tied the score at 3-all in the top of the 8th, Adam Duvall hit his 2nd homer of the game to send the 2021 Braves to a 5-3 victory and claim the first Shiloh title.

ROBERT HENRY MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

8/9/2025 - The 10th edition of the Robert Henry Memorial Tournament took place at the Alloy Hotel in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania on Saturday, August 9.  16 participants from the APBA adult community and campers from The Bridesburg Boys and Girls Club competed for the Dusty Welsh Championship Trophy.   Two divisions (Langhans and Seitz) each had 8 players with 7 games in group play.  In the semi-finals, Brian Cavanaugh and his 2024 Phillies defeated Rod McLeod and his 1953 Dodgers, 6-4, while Vincent Cavanaugh and his 2022 Astros downed Matt Pera and his 2022 Braves by a 5-4 score.  This set up an all-Cavanaugh family Championship game.  In a high scoring back and forth game, Vince defeated his dad Brian by a 9-6 margin.  Congratulations to Vincent, who is now a 3-time Champion of this tournament, to all of the participants, and to Dave Hummel for directing his first Henry Tournament.  Other items of interest on the day included: Gregg Wiseburn’s 1908 Detroit Tiger pitcher Ed Willett tossing a no-hitter against Gary Brown’s 2021 Dodgers; remembrance of Roy Langhans, David Small, and Nick Braccia, who all recently passed; and recognition of Rod McLeod for 5 years of participation.
