1949 Football AAFC Card Set
Before the American Football League (AFL) rivaled the National Football League (NFL) in the 1960’s, there was the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) that operated from 1946 to 1949 as a rival to the NFL during the immediate post-World War II period. The league’s emphasis on offensive innovation, evidenced by the Cleveland Browns’ 1948 undefeated regular season (15-0) and average game scores exceeding 40 points in championship contests, contributed to a more dynamic style that influenced subsequent NFL strategies. In April 2025, the NFL’s incorporation of AAFC statistics into its official records, adding 52 wins to Paul Brown’s career total and recognizing four Browns championships (1946–1949), affirmed the era’s legitimacy and integrated its data for historical assessments.
APBA has followed suit and created a legacy set of the 1949 All-American Football Conference (AAFC). The 1949 AAFC season was the fourth season of the All-America Football Conference. With the league teetering on the brink, seven teams played 12 games each that would see four teams compete in a playoff for the right to play in the AAFC Championship. The Cleveland Browns won the fourth and last AAFC championship. On December 9, Bert Bell announced a merger agreement in which three AAFC franchises - Cleveland, San Francisco, and Baltimore - would join the NFL in 1950.
This was the ironman era of professional football, where most players were two-way players who played both on offense and defense. The players wore shoulder and thigh pads with a plastic helmet, but face masks were not introduced yet. Hall of Famer players like Otto Graham averaged 17.3 yards per completion and Marion Motley gained 5.0 yards per carry. Fellow Cleveland Brown, Mac Speedie had league-leading 62 catches for 1028.
